One of the most common causes of tooth loss is trauma caused by sudden impact or unexpected contact with a hard surface. If you or someone you are with experience a dental emergency due to trauma, there are some things you can do to preserve the tooth that will increase your odds of saving it.
Pick the tooth up by the crown, the white chewing part, and do not touch the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly under cool water, milk, or saline, without scrubbing. If you can, put it straight back into the socket and bite gently on clean gauze to hold it there, since the socket is the best place to carry it. If that is not possible, keep it wet in cold milk, a tooth preservation solution, or saline. Do not use plain water, which damages the root cells and lowers the chance of successful reattachment. Then call Sage Dental immediately. Reimplantation works best within 30 minutes and the odds decline after the first hour, so this is the one dental emergency where minutes genuinely matter. A knocked-out baby tooth is different and should not be put back in; control the bleeding with gentle pressure and call us to check the socket. As your emergency dentist in San Jose, Sage Dental is ready to help right away.
Gather all of the broken pieces of the tooth and rinse them off in water making sure not to let them go down the drain. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply gauze if there is bleeding. Use a cold compress to relieve pain and swelling in the injured area, and contact Sage Dental immediately.
Sage Dental can easily fix a fractured tooth with a composite restoration procedure. Contact her within a couple of days of the injury to make an appointment.
When a tooth gets pushed out of its natural position, the first thing to do is to manage the pain by applying a cold compress to the area then taking an over-the-counter pain reliever. Next is to call Sage Dental and see the dentist as soon as possible.
If your crown has fallen off, save it and give Sage Dental a call immediately. If it has been chipped or broken and you are experiencing pain, take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Clove oil can also be used to soothe sensitive areas.
If you experience a tear, puncture, or laceration to the soft tissues of your cheek, lips, or tongue, immediately clean and pack the area with gauze. If you think you might need stitches, immediately get yourself to the emergency room.
